Some authors write from real feeling, the kind whose stories don't just entertain you but stick around long after the last page. Romance author Lynne Solisse is exactly that kind of writer.
With Off Limits and While the Moon Sleeps already out, Lynne blends sweetness, spice, emotional depth, and heroines readers can actually see themselves in. For this week's Author Hot Seat, we talked about finding creativity later in life, the messy reality of starting an indie career, and her drive to write stories that make readers feel something real.
Finding Fiction Later in Life
Writing romance wasn't always the plan for Lynne. About a year and a half ago she fell back into fiction after years away, and one series completely changed her trajectory.
“I had never read romance before and I read ACOTAR with no idea what it was about. The impact on my life was dramatic and quick. I wanted to be like the heroines I read about. Fierce, sexy, strong.”
It made her want to build women other readers could connect with just as hard.
“I decided I needed to create characters like this too. I want to make people feel something, the same way I did.”
Writing Women Who Have Actually Lived
One of the most compelling things about Lynne is that she leans into writing from a later stage of life, which is exactly what a lot of readers have been craving in romance.
“I'm older, late 40s, and I have done a lot of living. Raised kids, was married for many years. I'm recovering from a long phase of wanting to please everyone in my life.”
That lived experience threads through everything she writes. Instead of women whose whole identity orbits the romance, she writes women discovering themselves alongside love.
“Standing up for yourself. Finding love as an augmentation of who you are, not defining yourself by it.”
It lands with readers who want stories that feel grounded while still giving them the escape.
A Mind That Never Stops Moving
Away from writing, Lynne calls herself a "serial hobbyist," bouncing between tie dye, crochet, and photography.
“Pretty things make me happy.”
That creativity spills into her books too. She tucks personal Easter eggs into scenes and dialogue, little pieces of real life hidden in the story.
“I frequently include little snippets of daily life that I know one day I'll look back on and remember, like places I went with my family or jokes we shared.”
Those small details are what make a story feel intimate.
Where a Story Begins
Like a lot of writers, Lynne's ideas show up uninvited, at a red light, in an overheard conversation, in a stray "what if."
“There'll be a little spark, like sitting at a red light and wondering what it would be like to find my soulmate in the car next to mine.”
From there the scenes start playing out on their own.
“In the quiet moments, scenes and conversations will play themselves out in my head. It's kind of amazing, actually.”
She even texts herself ideas in the middle of the night so she doesn't lose them, which every writer reading this just nodded at.
Balancing the Art and the Business
Writing started as pure fun, but Lynne figured out fast that publishing means wearing more than the creative hat.
“To get my books in the hands of readers and have an impact on them, I do need to run it like a business.”
Like most indies, she's learning to balance the art with the marketing and audience-building. Her goals this year are ambitious: publish four books and break even. She laughs off the financial one as "an extreme long shot," and she's refreshingly honest about the whole thing.
The Magic Is the Reader Connection
Ask Lynne what long-term success looks like and she doesn't reach for bestseller lists or sales numbers. She reaches for community.
“Facebook groups full of people swooning over my MMCs and discussing my characters, because they resonated so much with them that they can't get them out of their heads!”
That connection matters to her, partly because she remembers exactly how much her first review meant.
“The very first review I got nearly gave me a heart attack. It was so exciting and nerve-wracking.”
For Lynne, the point was never just to publish. It's to leave readers with a feeling they can't shake.
“I want them to feel something. To look back and say, I was surprised or moved or sad when it was over. Or it was funny or made me happy. They'll never forget the way I made them feel.”
Why She's Worth Reading
What stands out most about Lynne is how genuine she is about all of it. She writes with heart and honesty and a real understanding that readers aren't only after romance, they're after connection. Whether you already know Off Limits and While the Moon Sleeps or you're just finding her now, she's an indie author worth watching. And if her story proves anything, it's that it's never too late to start making something beautiful.
